Its origins date back to 1959 with the establishment of the College of Medicine, yet its official foundation as a comprehensive academic institution was on April 1, 1967 , following Resolution No. (14) which declared the establishment of an Iraqi university under the name University of Mosul . Academic Growth and Expansion Throughout its journey, the University has witnessed remarkable growth. Today, it encompasses: 24 colleges across diverse scientific and humanistic disciplines. 9 specialized research centers. 8 consulting offices. 5 teaching hospitals and clinics. 7 university museums. Alongside a range of directorates and technical and administrative units that support its academic mission. Education and Scientific Research The University awards degrees at the bachelor’s, higher diploma, professional diploma, master’s, and doctoral levels across 138 academic specializations . It also provides continuing education programs designed to update graduates’ knowledge and connect them with the latest scientific developments. In the field of research, the University has established a robust academic system enabling its faculty members to contribute to patents and advanced studies. Among its notable achievements is the publication of the Mosul Civilizational Encyclopedia in five volumes, with preparations underway to publish the Iraq Civilizational Encyclopedia in over twenty volumes. Community Service Since 1988, the University has organized summer field programs, where students and professors extend services to villages and local communities in areas such as health, agriculture, and social development. It has hosted creative arts competitions in more than thirty genres, conducted surveys on oral and dental health across Ninawa schools, and sponsored the printing of the first edition of ʿ Uqud al-Juman fī Shu ʿ ar ā ʾ H ā dh ā al-Zam ā n by Ibn al-Shiʿār al-Mawsili. In addition, the University issued the first Arabic astronomical calendar since the Abbasid era in 2000 , which has since become one of the four most recognized global calendars. Campus Area and Infrastructure Main campus: 52.85 hectares. Second campus (including faculty housing): 2,296 hectares. College of Medicine facilities: 8,517 m². The University includes residential facilities, lecture halls, libraries, research and computer laboratories, a university theater, a sports complex, as well as restaurants and cafeterias. Surrounded by green landscapes and gardens, the campus offers an environment conducive to creativity and innovation.
