Title University of Mosul Policy on the Conservation, Restoration, and Sustainable Use of Terrestrial Ecosystems 2. Purpose / Objective This policy seeks to protect and conserve terrestrial ecosystems associated with the University of Mosul—including forests, mountains, and drylands—restore degraded areas, and ensure their sustainable use. Its primary goal is to enhance biodiversity, strengthen ecological resilience, and minimize negative environmental impacts arising from university-related activities. 3. Scope This policy applies to all university facilities and affiliated areas, as well as to academic, research, administrative, and operational activities that may directly or indirectly affect terrestrial ecosystems. 4. Principles / Commitments Forest and Mountain Conservation : Preventing unsustainable logging, supporting reforestation initiatives, and cooperating with relevant authorities. Soil and Dryland Protection : Combating desertification and erosion, implementing sustainable irrigation systems, and rehabilitating degraded soils. Academic and Research Sustainability : Promoting environmental research and educating students in conservation practices. Prevention of Environmental Harm : Limiting activities that negatively impact biodiversity and terrestrial habitats. 5. Procedures / Implementation Mechanisms Implementing reforestation and ecological restoration programs in degraded areas. Applying water-efficient irrigation systems in university green spaces. Integrating sustainability standards into construction and expansion projects. Conducting prior environmental impact assessments before initiating any major project. 6. Responsibilities University Administration : Setting policy direction and overseeing implementation. Environmental Sustainability Unit : Monitoring ecosystem conditions and preparing reports. Students and Researchers : Participating in conservation programs and environmental initiatives. 7. Monitoring and Evaluation Establishing a periodic monitoring system to track changes in forests and drylands. Producing semi-annual reports on the status of terrestrial ecosystems. Using performance indicators (e.g., reforestation rates, reduction in erosion levels) to measure policy effectiveness. 8. Review and Updates This policy shall be reviewed every three years, or earlier in response to significant environmental changes, to ensure alignment with national legislation, international standards, and best global practices in terrestrial conservation. 9.
