The course was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Michael Tritthart and Dr. Marcel Liedermann from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), with the participation of several faculty members, researchers, and specialists. The course included advanced scientific lectures in the fields of dam engineering and sustainable water resources management. Topics covered field measurements of flow and sediment, sediment management in rivers and reservoirs, and environmental status assessment of water bodies in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive. The lectures also linked engineering aspects with modern environmental and legislative considerations. In addition, the course focused on the application of two- and three-dimensional numerical models in analyzing hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and morphological changes in rivers and reservoirs, and their role in supporting engineering decision-making—particularly in light of climate change challenges such as increasing periods of drought and flooding. The program also highlighted European best practices in the planning and operation of hydraulic structures and hydropower projects, as well as water risk management at the river basin level. The course witnessed the participation of specialists from the Directorate of Water Resources / Nineveh Branch, along with faculty members from the Department of Dams and Water Resources Engineering and the Dams and Water Resources Research Center, in addition to postgraduate students. This contributed to enriching scientific discussions and strengthening the integration between academic and practical aspects. This course comes within the scientific activities of the College of Engineering and within capacity-building and knowledge-transfer programs aimed at developing academic and research competencies, enhancing international scientific cooperation, and supporting the role of the University of Mosul as a specialized scientific center in the fields of dam and water resources engineering.
