Teaching was initially conducted by foreign and Arab faculty members until qualified Iraqi academic staff were prepared. Among the pioneering Iraqi professors in teaching and scientific research within the department were Professor Dr. Abdul-Ilah Abdul-Mawjood and Dr. Nizar Yahya Nuzhat, who focused on preventive medical aspects in Iraq in general and Mosul city in particular. Later, the department’s name was changed to the Department of Community Medicine, and subsequently to the Department of Family and Community Medicine in 2013. The department became responsible for teaching the following subjects: Fundamentals of Medicine for first-year students. Medical Ethics for second-year students. Community Medicine, Nutrition, and Medical Statistics for third-year students. Community Medicine and Communication Skills for fourth-year students. Family Medicine for fifth-year students. Currently, the department is responsible for teaching Community Medicine to third- and fourth-year students, in addition to Family Medicine for fifth-year students since 2018 until the present time. The PhD program was established in 1993, and the Iraqi Board Fellowship in Family and Community Medicine was added in 2000. In 2011, the Higher Diploma in Family Medicine was introduced to meet the urgent need of the Ministry of Health for specialized family physicians. In 2018, the Professional Diploma in Family Medicine was added, and the PhD program in Community Medicine was re-established in 2025.
